When experimenters investigate the flow characteristics of flumes or weirs they commonly use a hook gage in conjuction with a vernier scale.

A hook gage is a used to very precisely measure the elevation of a liquid and works by using a curved, upward pointing hook connected to a scale.  The hook is submerged below the liquid's surface and then gradually raised until its point just pierces the liquid's surface.
