Maintenance Requirements for Weir Boxes
As with any Weir, regular maintenance is required for Weir Boxes.
In general, there are six checks that need to be conducted:
- Inspect for leakage of flow around the Weir Plate.
- Verify that the weir plate level horizontally and vertically.
- Inspect the weir crest for nicks and abrasions.
- The weir crest should be unblemished with sharp transitions (but not knife edged as the shape can be difficult to maintain) so that the nappe springs clear of the downstream face of the weir plate.
- Clean any debris from the weir crest.
- Inspect the upstream weir pool for debris, removing it as necessary. Debris in the weir pool can change the velocity profile of the flow approaching the weir plate.
- Verify that the flow approaching the weir is well distributed and does not possess undue turbulence.
These steps are for the maintenance of Weir Boxes in general. A fuller discussion of the operation and maintenance of Openchannelflow weir boxes.
