Edge-of-Field Performance Video of a 2.5-Foot H Flume

The video below highlights the ability of the H Flume to measure a wide range. The ability to accurately measure a wide flow span makes the H flume uniquely suited to edge-of-field installations. Edge-of-field monitoring serves as a bridge between larger watershed studies and smaller plot investigations.

As this video shows, a single rain event can contribute the majority of field runoff for an entire growing season. The events captured occurred over a 16 hour period, with precipitation occurring over two days – 1.3 inches [3.302 cm] the first day and 3.76 inches [9.550 cm] the second day.

The flume, a 2.5-foot H, experienced a peak flow level of 2.3 feet [70.10 cm] (approximately 7,181 gpm [453.0 l/s]). This flow came within 0.2 feet [6.096 cm] of overtopping the flume.

The flow through the flume remained greater than 0.5 feet [15.24 cm](253.1 gpm [15.97 l/s] for about 6 hours.

Note the upstream ponding that results due to the volume of runoff. This is a reminder that, when installing a flume, consideration should be given to how the flume will impact the upstream channel.
