Metering Manholes | Open Channel Flow

Integrating Flumes - Weirs - Mag Meters

metering manhole with domed topMetering manholes are a convenient way to measure flows in a wide range of applications, including: wastewater treatment plant headworks / influent, treated effluent, in-plant flows, industrial discharge, or monitoring the flow of sewage in a collection system. Capable of favorite integrating any one of a number of primary devices (flumes, weirs, mag meters), metering manholes ship complete and ready for immediate installation. Installation requires little more than excavating the pipe, pouring a concrete slab, and securing the manhole. Dig It! Drop It! Done!

One-Piece Construction

Most metering manhole configurations ship as single-piece, watertight unit. For larger configurations / manhole sizes, a metering manhole may ship in two pieces - with the base containing the measurement device and the upper portion the manhole barrel. When shipped as two pieces, an adhesive channel is provided to ensure a strong, water-right connection between manhole sections.

Primary Device Flexibility

Metering manholes most commonly integrate flumes, with the Parshall and Palmer-Bowlus flumes being the most common. However, Trapezoidal, Cutthroat, and HS / H flumes are readily integrated. When a flume is not used, metering manholes can integrate weirs or magnetic flow meters as the primary device.

Tops for Every Location

Metering manholes are available in a range of top styles and diameters; allowing customization to each site's specific needs.

For areas that won't see vehicle or pedestrian foot traffic, a domed fiberglass lid is provided. Sitting a foot above grade, the domed top makes it easy for operators to enter / exit the manhole. Raising the manhole above the surrounding grade ensures the inflow doesn't occur and gives the operator a comfortable handhold.

For foot traffic locations, a flat aluminum cover is provided. The cover is split into hinges and fix sides, with the hinged side being 2/3 of the cover. To minimize trip hazard, aluminum top metering manholes are sized to be flush with the surrounding grade.

Metering manholes in traffic areas (roads, parking lots, loading docks, and warehouse floors) require a different top. Here a reducer cone is provided. The cone is used in conjunction with a standard stack of grade rings, frame, and cover to transfer wheel loads to the manhole walls in a controlled manner. Traffic manholes are sized to be a foot below grade to allow for stack to bring the installation up to grade.

Range of Sizes

Metering manholes are available in: 48", 60", 72", and 96" sizes. Most metering manholes are provided with couplings (for sample / flow meter / power lines) and fiberglass ladders with stainless steel reinforced ladder rungs.

Depths can range from ~2-feet to 35-feet deep, depending upon the primary device and manhole diameter.

Easy Installation

At the base of a metering manhole is a full diameter external mounting flange. Wedge style anchor bolts are used to secure the manhole to a concrete slab. The slab can be poured off-site and the manhole attached or it can be poured in the excavation and the manhole lowered on to it. Dig It!  Drop It!  Done!
