Small Water Users and California SB 88

california water board sb 88 water measurement stationIf you divert, store, or use water from a surface source or you divert water from a subsurface stream in a known and defined channel, California SB 88 requires that you report your diversion and use to the State Water Board, Division of Water Rights. This reporting is required annually. Whether the water is from another property or wholly contained on the property, the diversion / storage / use must be reported.

The extended drought in California has highlighted the need for more current and accurate information on the State’s watersheds. While this legislation is intended to allow the State Water Board and all water users to use this resource more effectively, the need to instrument previously unmonitored flows can be overwhelming to small water users.
