Parshall Flumes
The Parshall Flume is an economical and accurate way of measuring water flow in open channels and pipes that don’t run full. For over 100 years it’s been the world’s most widely used flume.
Choosing the most popular flume has its perks. Parshall Flumes are:
- Familiar to most operators, which means training is minimal (or not needed).
- Most widely researched, which offers ongoing insight into ideal applications and limitations.
Parshall Flumes are adaptable. They can work with above- and below-ground flows. Parshall Flumes are used in a range of applications from open channels to in-line piping, and even below grade manhole installations.
The Parshall Flume allows you to calculate the water flow rate with (1) easy depth measurement and is available in (22) standard sizes.
While Openchannelflow Parshall Flumes are versatile enough to be used in lots of locations, it’s important to confirm that your application is a good match.
Parshall Flumes are available in a wide range of standard sizes, making it possible to measure small, ephemeral flows to large, municipal plant flows. The benefit of “standard” sizing is that no field calibration is required. The drawback is that non-standard or intermediate sizes aren’t available.
Parshall Flumes have drop floor in the throat / discharge sections. It might mean that for a Parshall Flume to work, you may need to elevate the flume in an open channel, or consider another type like a Cutthroat Flume that has a flat floor.

Parshall Flumes are available in:
- Aluminum, which is easy to handle and lightweight enough to be portable.
- Fiberglass, which is resistant to corrosion, competitively priced, and the best choice for sewage flows.
- Galvanized steel, which is easy to repair, the best choice when cost is a concern, but not for use on applications measuring sewage.
- Stainless steel, which is very strong, resistant to corrosion, and the most expensive.
Make the most of Parshall Flumes with accessories including:
- End Connections for pipe flows that help control and transition flow into and out of the flume in line with piping.
- Stilling Wells that isolate flow, dampening waves and surges, allowing for exact flow measurement.
- Flow Meter Mounts ensure sensors are in the right point of measurement within the flume, plus are easy for operators to use and adjust.
- Packaged Metering Manholes that combine with the flume for a complete, integrated structure for operators to measure and sample flows.
