Portable Weir Plates

Quick Links

Portable Weir Plates are a lightweight, flexible method of conducting short-term flow measurement of surface waters. Each set comes with (4) interchangeable stainless steel plates, including 22-1/2º, 45º, 90º and 1-foot Cipolletti, and an aluminum weir carrier — allowing you to dial in the exact flow range you need to monitor.

A set of Portable Weir Plates allows you to use the best weir plate for each site’s flow rates, and even replace them in the field if needed.

Portable Weir Plates are:

  • Strong and rugged enough for field work.
  • Able to hold an edge.
  • Precision cut by laser or water jet — depending upon the material.

The standard weir carrier is 48-inches [1.22 m] wide by 31.5 inches [0.8 m] high, while the weir plates are sized to follow ISO 1438 standards. If you need custom options, Openchannelflow can create those, too.

The thickness of the plate where the notch, or “weir crest”, is cut is important. If the plate is too thin, it will be difficult to maintain. If it’s too thick, there might not be enough aeration for it to work properly.

Reading a weir is easiest when flow has been stopped, but stopped flow isn’t a requirement. For Portable Weir Plates to provide accurate measurements, it’s essential they are appropriately maintained and not used on flows with floating trash, debris, or solids that may drop out upstream.

Portable Weir Plates are for measuring flows at ordinary temperatures (39 to 86ºF) [3.9 to 30º C]. Colder water can allow ice to form on the crest, which can result in inaccurate readings.

Openchannelflow Portable Weir Plate Sets are made of strong, corrosion-resistant T-304 stainless steel. The weir carrier is made of lightweight aluminum.
