Fiberglass Advantages

Typically constructed of polyester resins, fiberglass H flumes are light weight, corrosion resistant, economical, can have tight dimensional tolerances, and have considerable configuration flexibility.    

Light Weight

Fiberglass H flumes are about 1/2 the weight of comparable steel construction flume, at about 2 to 2.5 lbs/ft2 [9.8 to 12.2 kg/m2], and about the same weight as an aluminum construction flumes. Their light weight makes fiberglass H flumes useful where the installation site is remote - particularly watershed / surface water monitoring applications.

Corrosion Resistance

Polyester resins are suitable for most surface water, industrial discharge, and wastewater applications where the flow stream may be mildly acid or basic and at atmospheric temperatures.  For more aggressive / higher temperature applications, alternative resin systems (usually vinyl esters or epoxies) can be used, although it is usually more cost effective to use stainless steel construction.


Standard fiberglass (polyester resin) construction, puts fiberglass H flumes between galvanized / painted steel and aluminum / stainless steel construction when it comes to cost.

Dimensional Tolerances

H flume - particularly the HS sizes - require tight dimensional tolerances.  Precise master molds allow Openchannelflow H flumes to be remarkably accurate in their dimensions.
