Fiberglass (FRP) H Flumes
Fiberglass (FRP / GRP) H Flumes are the default material for most H Flume applications - from stream gauging to wastewater treatment plants.
Fiberglass Advantages
Typically constructed of polyester resins, fiberglass H Flumes are light weight, corrosion resistant, economical, can have tight dimensional tolerances, and have considerable configuration flexibility.
Correcting H Flume Flow Submergence
While it is desirable for a flume to have free, unimpeded discharge, it can be difficult to guarantee this under all flow conditions. H Type flumes have particularly low resistance to submergence, with submergence transitions of only 30%. The submergence transition of an H…
H Flume Maintenance
The H series of flumes have shown themselves to be excellent at monitoring flows in irrigation channels and even industrial discharges. One of the reasons that H flumes work so well is their ability to pass solids. Another advantage of H flumes is their ability to…
Stream Gauging with H Flumes
A great time lapse video showcasing the ability of the H Flume to handle a wide range of flow conditions. The video covers a six day period captured in 30 minute intervals and details the dramatic increase in flows due to a significant precipitation event. From low flows…
Fiberglass H Flumes are about 1/2 the weight of comparable steel construction flume, at about 2 to 2.5 lbs/ft2 [9.8 to 12.2 kg/m2], and about the same weight as an aluminum construction flumes. Their light weight makes fiberglass H Flumes useful where the installation site is remote - particularly watershed / surface water monitoring applications.
Polyester resins are suitable for most surface water, industrial discharge, and wastewater applications where the flow stream may be mildly acid or basic and at atmospheric temperatures. For more aggressive / higher temperature applications, alternative resin systems (usually vinyl esters or epoxies) can be used, although it is usually more cost effective to use stainless steel construction.
Standard fiberglass (polyester resin) construction, puts fiberglass H Flumes between galvanized / painted steel and aluminum / stainless steel construction when it comes to cost.
H Flume - particularly the HS sizes - require tight dimensional tolerances. Precise master molds allow Openchannelflow H Flumes to be remarkably accurate in their dimensions.
Openchannelflow fiberglass H Flumes are available with a wide selection of accessories and mounting / end configuration options.
