Based on the popular Parshall Flume, the Montana Flume has a shorter design, making it an inexpensive, easy-to-install, and accurate measuring choice, especially when space is limited.
A modification of the Parshall Flume, Montana Flumes omit the throat and discharge sections, making them even easier (and less expensive) to make and install. There’s no need to worry if a flow meter supports Montana Flumes, because they use the same discharge equations and flow tables as Parshall Flumes.
Like the Parshall Flume, Openchannelflow Montana Flumes are also available in (22) standard sizes — although sizes greater than 60-inches are uncommon.
Needing just (1) easy depth measurement, Montana Flumes are used to measure flows in a variety of applications — including sewage treatment, watershed monitoring, dam seepage, mine discharge, irrigation canals, and more.
Lesser known that it’s more popular relative, there is some confusion about what a Montana Flume is. Essentially, it’s a converging section with a flat floor — or a Parshall Flume minus the throat and discharge sections!
Because of these modifications, Montana Flumes:
- Must have free-spilling discharge under all flow conditions.
- Can’t use a standard end adapter to collect flow.
- Can’t correct for submergence.
Montana Flumes are available in:
- Aluminum, which is easy to handle and lightweight enough to be portable.
- Fiberglass, which is resistant to corrosion, competitively priced, and the best choice for sewage flows.
- Galvanized steel, which is easy to repair, the best choice when cost is a concern, but not for use on applications measuring sewage.
- Stainless steel, which is very strong, resistant to corrosion, and the most expensive.
Make the most of Montana Flumes with accessories including:
- End Connections for pipe flows that help control and transition flow into and out of the flume in line with piping.
- Stilling Wells that isolate flow, dampening waves and surges, allowing for exact flow measurement.
- Flow Meter Mounts ensure sensors are in the right point of measurement within the flume, plus are easy for operators to use and adjust.
- Packaged Metering Manholes that combine with the flume for a complete, integrated structure for operators to measure and sample flows.
