Trapezoidal Flumes
Like most flumes, Trapezoidal Flumes were initially developed for agricultural applications. However, applications have expanded over the years to include sanitary and industrial flows.
Trapezoidal Flumes are adaptable and able to measure channel and pipe flows alike. Originally developed to measure low agricultural flows, Trapezoidal Flumes can be used for industrial discharges, sanitary sewers, and dam seepage.
The Trapezoidal Flume has a V-shape that mirrors the natural channels it was originally designed to fit. This can result in less expensive installation costs than you might find with rectangular or U-shaped flumes. The design also includes a flat floor — which can help in retrofit applications and passes solids easily.
While there are several standard sizes of Trapezoidal Flumes, there aren’t nearly as many as there are for Parshall, Montana, or Cutthroat Flumes. There may not be a Trapezoidal Flume that fits your anticipated flow rates.
In addition to the limited number of sizes, additional limitations you might consider with Trapezoidal Flumes:
- The amount of change in water level, also known as flow sensitivity or resolution, decreases as flow increases.
- There might not be preprogrammed selections for Trapezoidal Flumes on some flow meters.

Trapezoidal Flumes are available in:
- Aluminum, which is easy to handle and lightweight enough to be portable.
- Fiberglass, which is resistant to corrosion, competitively priced, and the best choice for sewage flows.
- Galvanized steel, which is easy to repair, the best choice when cost is a concern, but not for use on applications measuring sewage.
- Stainless steel, which is very strong, resistant to corrosion, and the most expensive.
Make the most of Trapezoidal Flumes with accessories including:
- Bulkheads, to attach the flumes to pipe stubs, flanges, or caulking collars.
- Above Ground Enclosures that factory integrate flumes and keep them protected in above ground uses.
- Packaged Metering Manholes that combine with the flume for a complete, integrated structure for operators to measure and sample flows.
- Flow Meter Mounts ensure sensors are in the right point of measurement within the flume, plus are easy for operators to use and adjust.
