Cutthroat Flumes

Quick Links

Hourglass-shaped Cutthroat Flumes are a good fit when measuring flows on a flat gradient, splitting flows, and applications that require retrofitting into an existing channel. While similar in layout to the more well known Parshall Flume, the Cutthroat Flume improves on some of its shortcomings.

Available in a wide range of standard sizes, Cutthroat Flumes are adaptable enough to work with channel and pipe flows alike. While other flumes only have standard sizes, Cutthroat Flumes are available in intermediate sizes — allowing you to tune the flume to your specific needs without the need for lab testing or calibration!

Openchannelflow Cutthroat Flumes:

  • Make it possible to measure flat-gradient flows.
  • Retrofit into an existing channel is easier.
  • Pass solids well due to the flat floor.
  • Are inexpensive.

Cutthroat Flumes are sometimes confused with Parshall Flumes. The two key differences are the absence of an extended throat — thus the name “Cutthroat” — and the flat floor.

Like the Parshall Flume, Cutthroat Flumes with small throats — smaller than 3-inches [7.62 cm] — shouldn’t be used on sanitary flows because they will clog. If you need a smaller size for a sanitary flow, you might consider a Trapezoidal Flume instead. We can help you confirm your choice or suggest a better alternative. Contact us.

Cutthroat Flumes are available in:

  • Aluminum, which is easy to handle and lightweight enough to be portable.
  • Fiberglass, which is resistant to corrosion, competitively priced, and the best choice for sewage flow.
  • Galvanized steel, which is easy to repair, the best choice when cost is a concern, but not for use on applications measuring sewage.
  • Stainless steel, which is very strong, resistant to corrosion, and the most expensive.

Make the most of Cutthroat Flumes with accessories including:

  • End Connections for pipe flows that help control and transition flow into and out of the flume in line with piping.
  • Stilling Wells that isolate flow, dampening waves and surges, allowing for exact flow measurement.
  • Flow Meter Mounts ensure sensors are in the right point of measurement within the flume, plus are easy for operators to use and adjust.
  • Wing Walls that attach to the flume and help direct flow in or out.
